Crown Archetype Astroball: The New Way to Win It All

Ben Reiter
When we hosted Ben Reiter in our Houston shop, people lined up outside the door to meet him. And we sold out of books that night, because here's the thing: Ben is something of a fortune teller. Back in 2014, he wrote a cover story for Sports Illustrated predicting that the notoriously terrible, consistently bottom-of-the-league Houston Astros would win the 2017 World Series. This was a bizarrely specific claim, and at the time, people thought he was crazy. But a new GM (Jeff Luhnow) and a former-rocket-scientist analyst (Sig Mejdal) had been hard at work devising a new scouting strategy — one that combined human instinct and hard statistics — to rebuild the team with key draft picks. And, you know, it paid off... because on November 1, 2017, the Astros defeated the Dodgers 5-1. It was a big deal. So while everyone loves a comeback story, this is more than that. As the New York Times wrote, it's "the story of the next wave of thinking in baseball and beyond, at once a remarkable underdog story and a fascinating look at the cutting edge of evaluating and optimizing human potential."
